Australia may have unbelievably large spiders and tim tams, but they don’t have an adult rating for video games, meaning anything with a stronger rating than MA15+ has to either be re-cut or banned.  The makers of Aliens vs Predator (Rebellion Developments) have refused to cut the violence out of their game, issuing this rock ‘n’ roll quote:

“We will not be releasing a sanitised or cut down version for territories where adults are not considered by their governments to be able to make their own entertainment choices.”

Right on, right on.  So what was so bad about the game?  News.com.au reports:

Aliens vs Predator was banned for showing close-ups of human characters experiencing “explicit decapitation and dismemberment” as well as “stabbing through the chest, throat, mouth or eyes.” [...] “Characters can be stabbed with a Predator’s wrist blade or an Alien’s tail in depictions reminiscent of impalement,” the report says, adding that players can combine explicit violent moves, such as decapitation or eye-gouging.  Similar actions are depicted in the movie series that inspired the game, with none of the films rated above MA15+.

Ah, so the movie can be broadcasted and that’s okay, but don’t let anybody have the same thing in the form you’d have to go out and buy and have the wherewithal to install on a computer.  Because kids could see that!
