MARVEL COMICS FOR GIRLS, BY GIRLS
12.16.09
March of next year marks the 30th anniversary of She-Hulk, and March is Women’s History Month as well. (Oh, a whole month? You shouldn’t have. I only carried you for ten months and ruined my figure for you. One-twelfth of the year and a footnote on a calendar for little old me? It’s too much for your dear sweet mother to bear.) Whoa, I blacked out a second. I’ll go back to my taxidermy and hotel-running while you read this:
Officially ignoring recent allegations of sexism, Marvel Comics is nonetheless making 2010 their Year of Women with new Marvel Women branding and — announced today — a special [three issue] series untouched by male hands, called Girl Comics. [io9]
On the one hand, this seems like patting women on the head and saying, “See, you can work here too, little lady,” like when stand-up comedy announcers always emphasize that the comedian coming up next is female (like we have to be forewarned or something). On the other hand, holy crap check out who’s working on this series: Kathryn Immonen, Marjorie Liu, Devin Grayson, Ann Nocenti, Trina Robbins, G. Willow Wilson, Stephanie Buscema, Amanda Conner, Jill Thompson, Louise Simonson, Valerie D’Orazio, Colleen Coover, Molly Crabapple, Nikki Cook, Ming Doyle, Abby Denson, and Carla Speed McNeil. They didn’t even need to point out that they’re all girls. They could have just said, “Look who we got, sucka. Jealous?”

Sure it’s a great line up, but Girl Comics? Could you imagine Black Comics?
/hurriedly hides longbox full of Milestones.
So it takes like 20 women to make 3 fucking comics?
Their only directive from Marvel headquarters:
TITS or STFU
Wow, I am somewhat excited for exactly two of those creators.
You couldn’t get Gail Simone or Pia Guerra?
Wow. Wonder Woman is from DC, idiots.
Don’t be a comic book geek, idiot.
In all fairness, most female comics suck. Then again, most male comics suck. Same tired routines dragged out.
Anybody ever notice that you never see Stephanie Buscema and Steve Buscemi at the same time?
Devin Grayson is the Shiznits. LOVE her writing.
