George Lucas has been hinting for awhile at the possibility of milking his back catalogue via 3-D rereleases of Star Wars.  Lucasfilm’s Head of Fan Relations Steve Sansweet even went so far as to clarify that any 3-D releases would be rereleases of the first six films, not a new trilogy.  Access Hollywood spoke to Lucas at the Golden Globes, where he, like everyone else in “post-Avatar” (ugh) Hollywood, has jumped on Avatar‘s lap and asked it for a pony. (Figuratively, I hope.  George is a big guy.)

George was so impressed with the movie’s technology – which took home the trophy for Best Motion Picture – Drama at the 2010 Globes – that he thinks it could help pave the way for creating 3-D versions of his “Star Wars” movies.  “We’ve been looking for years and years and years of trying to take ‘Star Wars’ and put it in 3-D,” George explained to Access. “But, [the] technology hasn’t been there. We’ve been struggling with it, but I think this will be a new impetus to make that happen.” [Access Hollywood via /film]

I’m not sure how well the movies would convert to 3-D (Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith were the only two shot completely digitally), but, as always, Lucas has only one response for his critics:
