Luke was in Cloud City and fell into a garbage chute kind of tube. The Emperor was in the Death Star and got thrown into the reactor core.

Duh.
a garbage chute that certainly got a lot of use considering it wasn’t near any walkway. Why couldn’t the emperor jump in a different vestigial garbage chute?
