It’s been a while since we’ve heard or seen much from Sony and Naughty Dog’s The Road The Last of Us, but late yesterday they finally gave us another trailer. No gameplay footage yet, but according to Sony the trailer was executed using the game’s engine, so yeah, this game is going to look pretty damn amazing.

Marvel Studios News — Two Unannounced Projects in the Works, Avengers 2 to be Less of a Sausage Party

05.15.12 Written by Nathan Birch

Hey, did you hear? The Avengers has made a billion dollars. That’s billion, with a “b”. Yeah, Marvel Studios is doing okay for themselves, and they have big plans — in addition to Iron Man 3, Thor 2 and Captain America 2, studio president Kevin Feige recently let slip that there are two other unannounced Marvel movies currently in production.

What could these two mystery movies be? They’re nothing Spider-Man or X-Men related as the rights to those properties are tied up by other studios. One of them could be the Ant-Man project Edgar Wright’s been hinting at. Iron Fist, Black Panther and Dr. Strange movies have all been reported to be in various early stages of development as well. Personally I’m hoping for a U.S. 1 adaptation.

Getting back to The Avengers, Joss Whedon recently talked about the lack of female heroes in the movie, and said he plans to add more if he gets to direct the next one (which he probably will ’cause, you know, billion dollars and all). The obvious choice would be team founder The Wasp, but I’m pulling for She-Hulk, because green chicks are hot man.

Engineer Starts a Website Dedicated to Building a Space-Worthy Trillion Dollar Enterprise Replica. Uh, Good Luck?

05.15.12 Written by Nathan Birch

So, some engineer who just goes by “Dan” (not Seitz…at least I don’t think so) has gone and started a website called Build the Enterprise, dedicated to posting his plans for a full-size, space-worthy replica of the USS Enterprise. An engineer that likes Star Trek? Well, now I’ve heard everything.

Now, before you get too excited, Dan hasn’t invented the warp drive — instead the idea seems to be that this ship would be a fancy replacement for the International Space Station. According to Dan’s plans his Enterprise would house up to 1000 people, be a lot roomier than the current space station, have gravity and be able to putter around our own little corner of the galaxy, making trips to the Moon, Mars and Venus. The price tag for building this “Gen1″ Enterprise? Oh, around a trillion dollars.

It’s also going to be fairly large.

So yeah, it’s very unlikely anything like this is going to happen within the next 100 years, but the site is still entertaining. At the very least it’s a fun, and seemingly fairly informed, bit of speculation about what the bridge between current human space exploration and the Star Trek chillin’ in space in miniskirts future might look like.

New Kickstarter Project Aims to Let You Control Any Game With Anything

05.14.12 Written by Nathan Birch

So, we haven’t brought you many stories about new Kickstarter projects lately, because frankly there’s just too many of them to keep track of at this point. Basically, around the time a Kickstarter for a new Leisure Suit Larry game popped up, I lost the ability to keep track and/or care.

Thankfully a couple MIT students have come along and roused me from my Kickstarter coma. These guys are looking for funds to put together an invention kit called MaKey MaKey that will let you turn almost anything into a video game controller. With this kit you’ll be able to make controllers out of Play Doh, fruit or coolest of all in my opinion, just draw a controller on a piece of paper and have it work. How do they do it? Don’t ask me, but it’s pretty damn cool.

Check out a video of MaKey MaKey in action after the jump…

Aw Darn, Society Goes On — Archaeologists Find Mayan Calendar that Extends Far Beyond 2012

05.14.12 Written by Nathan Birch

Hey! Hey you, guy in the bunker! Stop filtering your urine and fantasizing about a post-apocalyptic future where you’re free to shoot your neighbours and pay attention — turns out the world won’t be ending in 2012!

Now of course most intelligent/sane people already know that — the idea that the Mayan calendar “ending” in 2012 will cause the end of the world is silly, especially since it isn’t ending in 2012 at all. Just as today’s calendars have weeks/months/decades and so on, the Mayan calendar has it’s own repeating cycles. 2012 marks the end of a b’ak’tun, a Mayan time unit around 394 years long, but it’s not the end of the Mayan calendar. Once one b’ak’tun ends, another begins — there was never a specific ending point to the Mayan calendar any more than there’s one for our modern Gregorian system.

But just in case mere logic and knowledge of how calendars work isn’t enough for you, here’s some more concrete evidence — archaeologists have found a new ancient Mayan calendar that goes far beyond 2012. The calendar, discovered at the ancient Mayan archaeological site of Xultun, extends all the way to the year 3500. The wall this calendar was found on also contains tons of other complex astrological calculations proving the Mayans weren’t a simple superstitious people who thought the world was going to end at a set point, but keen observers and mathematicians who probably would have laughed at all this 2012 goofiness.

Not that any of this “conclusive evidence” stuff is going to convince most hardcore 2012 believers, but hopefully it’ll deter a few dumbass 14-year-olds who watched “2012″ and think we’re all going to be destroyed by a giant volcano emerging from Yellowstone park.

25 Great Ideas for a New Star Trek TV Series

05.11.12 Written by Nathan Birch

The recent J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie was a big success (to the tune of nearly 400 million dollars) and a big budget sequel is coming in 2013, which begs the question, when are we getting a new Star Trek TV series? Traditionally Star Trek has been primarily a TV-based franchise — it just seems weird to be getting these movies without a Trek show on the air.

Now, rumor has it  a new Star Trek TV show may happen after the release of the next movie, but what this show’s premise will be is unknown. Well, just in case they’re still taking suggestions, I have a few ideas for new Trek TV shows…
