Reimagining Art History As Science Fiction

02.08.12 Written by RoboPanda

Irene Gallo of Tor Books put together a great selection of science fiction works of art which reference famous paintings and prints like John Mattos’ fantastic C-3PO upgrade of Marcel Duchamp’s groundbreaking cubist/futurist Nude Descending a Staircase. Sidenote: I’ve seen that painting of Duchamp’s up close in Philly, and man was it even stranger and dissettlingly awesome in person, in no small part because the nude figure is about the same height as you when you look at it, and they hanged it at just the right height to seem like this creepy figure was nearing the end of the staircase and coming right at you. Nightmare fuel.

We’ve collected our ten favorites along the famous works they reference (plus a bonus picture) from Irene Gallo’s gallery at Tor Books starting on the next page. Thanks to Neatorama for the assist.

40 More Geeky Valentine’s Day Cards

02.03.12 Written by RoboPanda

[via]

A few days ago we posted this gallery of 35 geeky valentines, and, as is inevitable, we then found several more cards we missed (technically more than 40, but we like nice round numbers). Those start on the next page.

It’s not too late to buy some of these on Etsy or make them yourself for people you care enough about to burn through precious, precious printer ink. And, if you happen to know Justin Bartha, we demand you make the valentine above and slide it under his door anonymously. I’m pretty sure a dollar bill wants me to tell you that. The dollar bill is trying to tell me something.

35 Geeky Valentine’s Day Cards

01.31.12 Written by RoboPanda

[via]

Every year we post several geeky parody valentines before Valentine’s Day. Yes, we’re a couple weeks early, but that’s not because it’s an absurdly slow news day and I’ve been starting one-sided arguments with my cat all morning to pass the time. No, that’s just a normal Tuesday. The real reason we’re posting these early is to give you time to acquire some of them for the ones you love, the ones you just sort of like, and the ones you start arguments with just to have something to do.

Last year’s valentines can be viewed here, and the year before last’s are here. (UPDATE: 40 new cards here.) Read on for the 35 we picked for this year’s gallery:

Marvel Invokes The Classics With Avengers Art Appreciation Variants

01.27.12 Written by RoboPanda

Throughout the month of April, Marvel series like Uncanny X-Men, Avengers, Amazing Spider-Man, and Fantastic Four will have “Avengers Art Appreciation Variants” as their covers to promote the theatrical release of The Avengers in May. These covers depict The Avengers in the style of famous artists like Rodin, Monet, Seurat, Schielle, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, and others, like the Joe Quinones piece above which references Toulouse-Lautrec’s famous lithograph Moulin Rouge: La Goulue. Besides Quinones, other artists contributing covers include Alex Maleev, Michael Kaluta, Gabriele Dell’Otto, Greg Horn, Gerald Parel, Steffi Schutzee, Christian Nauck, Girihiru, Stephanie Hans, Mike Del Mundo, Julian Totino, Khoi Pham, John Tyler Christopher, and Charles Paul Wilson III.

We have a sneak preview of fifteen of these covers starting on the next page. It just got classy up in here.

Take That, Antiques: Geeky Modifications Of Vintage Portraits By Alex Gross

01.26.12 Written by RoboPanda

Making “piggyback art” requires taking a pre-existing work of art and adding to it, which is the best possible use for the paintings at Goodwill (and I have the crappy landscape painting with Cthulhu added to it hanging on my wall to prove it). Alex Gross has applied this piggyback art aesthetic to antique cabinet card photographs, transforming these vintage photos into his “Heroes, Villains, and Monsters” series. His work will be on exhibit at the Jonathan Levine Gallery in LA starting February 25th, and Gross also sells giclée print sets of his modified cabinet cards at his website (here, here, and here).

We’ve placed the 31 geekiest ones here, and the rest can be viewed at Alex’s site. All pictures via Alex Gross and Arrested Motion (via Neatorama).
