A Compendium of Cool Comics Cosplay: January 20th

01.20.12 Written by Angelophile

It’s time once again for our Friday comic book cosplay feature, spotlighting the best superhero (and villain) related costuming from the cosplay community.  We’re casting the spotlight onto those cosplayers who we think deserve special recognition for coming up with the best costumes, whatever the budget, and the photographers who capture them for posterity.

Gamma Squad is committed to giving a voice to the cosplay community that thrives in groups like our friends at TheSuperheroCostumingForum.com. Each week we spotlight our favorite costumes and each month we host a cosplay contest. We’ll be picking a theme for each month and inviting cosplayers, costumers and photographers to submit related pictures of their work to our Flickr group to be considered. We’ll then pick our top choices and post them on Gamma Squad for the adoration of all.

The theme for the upcoming month is:

  • Super Villains and Diabolical Foes

For now, enjoy this week’s selection!

Humpday Mashup Dump

10.12.11 Written by RoboPanda

Good morning you princes of Maine, you kings of New England, you stalkers of Evangeline Lilly. Here are all the mashup and parody videos I didn’t get a chance to cover, thrown in your face like you’re Jodie Foster working for the FBI.

In the offing for today:

  1. Siri for the iPhone 4S gets a voice and intelligence upgrade with Aperture Science’s GLaDOSiri. [via GeeksAreSexy]
  2. LegoLambs (of Conan: The Musical and Predator: The Musical infamy) are back with John Carpenter’s The Thing: The Musical, sung in the style of Frank Sinatra. This is probably NSFW due to tons of violence and at least one F-bomb. [via ToplessRobot]
  3. Remember the cute video of little kids reacting to Darth Vader being Luke’s father? The inevitable has happened: people are adding other movies to it. We’ve got a video of them reacting to the ending of Se7en (NSFW audio) after the jump [via Videogum] and there are two more like this you can watch at The Daily What and Nate Smith Comedy.
  4. “Don’t Hold Back, Just Push Things Forward” by Ithaca Audio, an audio mashup of Shaft and the Imperial March from Star Wars along with several other clips [via Buzzfeed]
  5. Banner picture: Malvin and Cobbes V2 by Karen Hallion [via]
  6. Inset picture via Sir Mitchell.

Words Cannot Express How Much I Want A Hobbes Stuffed Animal

09.30.11 Written by Brian Childs

Flickr user Lindsay Mays has made a spot on Hobbes so accurate it looks like it is about to come alive and sled down a massive, snowy hillside with you. Apparently there were some more dolls available at her Etsy shop, but those have been gobbled up by the Internet fans of Calvin and Hobbes.

I realize that Bill Watterson did not want to water down his magnificent artistic project with commercial goods. And I’m really glad there won’t ever be a Calvin and Hobbes MetLife commercial. But while I will never own a Calvin peeing on something sticker, I give my unborn child a Hobbes doll someday. Oh yes, it will be mine ours my kid’s toy.

Custom ‘Calvin and Hobbes’ Sneakers by Aaron Nason

08.30.11 Written by Brian Childs

Who wouldn’t want “Calvin & Hobbes” walking around with them wherever they go? Etsy artist Aaron Nason has designed some sneakers that will remind you of everyone’s favorite comic strip. Custom painted sneakers sounds like they would be out of the typical fanboy’s price range, but at $40 you can get these shoes cheaper than most name brand shoes at the store. Check out more images of these sneakers after the jump or purchase a pair at Nason’s store.

The Spirit Of ‘Calvin and Hobbes’ Gets Channeled In ‘It’s A Good Life’

08.24.11 Written by Brian Childs

Remember that hole in your heart created when “Calvin and Hobbes” ended? Timothy Lim and Mark Pellegrini are putting a band aid over it with their comic strip, “It’s A Good Life“.

Timothy Lim’s chameleonic ability to mimic artistic styles is remarkable and gives the comic a wide range of art options that just aren’t available to most webcomics. Most impressive is his ability to inhabit the style created by Bill Watterson in “Calvin and Hobbes”. Like pretty much every comic book reader alive during Watterson’s 1985-1995 run, “Calvin and Hobbes” is probably my all time favorite comic strip. As a result, it is basically impossible for me to look at “It’s a Good Life” and not feel a flush of pleasure from recognition. It doesn’t hurt that “It’s a Good Life” also lifts some of Watterson’s best Sunday comic storytelling techniques, for example, in the strip below when he shifts styles to indicate playing make believe Ghostbusters is definitely indepted to Watterson’s strip of Calvin and Susie playing house.

Pellegrini’s writing is much more along the lines of a “Foxtrot,” the strip firmly resides in pop culture commentary, sex jokes and the occasional racial humor joke (so far always Asian jokes about Timothy Lim). The pairing of these two styles seems like an Internet goldmine and I can’t wait to see more strips.

Check out some of our favorites here or see more of “It’s a Good Life” on Timothy Lim’s Deviant Art page.
