I heard Canadian zombies always put on a lobster bib and say grace before eating your brains because they’re so polite. Just what I heard.

We’ve All Been Using Our Couches Incorrectly

08.05.11 Written by Chodin

Up in Canada, things get done a little differently. Specifically, I’m talking about the way that those Canucks up in British Columbia use their couches. As so wonderfully documented by Team Jacob, over at BroShenanigans Productions, couches are a wonderful resource when looking to surf across a peaceful lake or even cruise about the countryside down an empty highway. Outfit your couch with some porn, duct tape and a set of antlers, and suddenly you’ve transformed your sofa into a workout bench. You’d be surprised at just how useful the things that we stick our asses on can be.

Finally Coming To The Movies: Captain…Canuck?!

07.25.11 Written by Dan Seitz

This weekend, Captain America made $65 million and had nerds everywhere breathing a sigh of relief. It also has suddenly inspired dozens of production companies to rip it off for profit, and the most obvious of these will be the movie of Vindicator Captain Canuck.

I’d like to say I have an affection for the comics, having read them when I was a kid, but I don’t. There’s a reason these comics have never been consistently published: they’re terrible. They make Canada look like they have a raging inferiority complex because we have Captain America and they don’t. “Oh, yeah? Well, we have a superhero with a patriotic outfit that looks silly too. And…and…he got his superstrength from aliens. And in 1993 Canada is the strongest nation in the world! So there!”

Anyway, Minds Eye Entertainment has optioned Captain Canuck for a motion picture, and we’re a little surprised the Asylum didn’t beat them to it. We look forward to this movie: we’re sure it will have all the superb production values and brilliant writing we’ve come to expect from Canadians getting their hands on potential franchises without the resources of a major studio. Look what it did to for RoboCop!

Manga Puts You in Jail In Canada?

06.27.11 Written by Dan Seitz

Hey, remember when we told you back in May about Canadian customs stopping comics at the border because they were offensive to some theoretical person who even if they existed in the first place would probably never hear of these comics, let alone read them, and if they did somehow, it still wasn’t the fault of the artist?

Yeah, they’re at it again, and this time somebody might actually go to jail.

An unidentified American man was stopped at the Canadian border and had his personal electronics searched, because there might be terrorists in them or something. The customs official found a doujinishi of “Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha”, decided it was child pornography, and now this guy is facing charges of owning child pornography and trying to import it into Canada.

The key word: “decided”. At issue is whether a government official has the right to look at artwork and decide for an entire country whether or not it’s a crime. The case is firing up as we speak: the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and the Canadian Comic Legends Legal Defense Fund are stepping in to help this guy out.

The key thing to remember about this case, regardless of how it goes, is that the issue is whether or not governments have the right to decide for their citizens what “offensive” is. Also, while we’re at it, maybe we could establish that if there’s not a bomb in it, customs officials don’t have the right to go poking into people’s computers? Just saying.
