Pull List: Comics Released 2/8/12

02.08.12 Written by Dan Seitz

It’s Wednesday, and that means new comics! What have we got in the pipe for today? A lot of cancelled books, that’s what.

  • “All-New Batman The Brave and the Bold” buys the bat-farm with issue #16. Which is kind of a shame, since it had a cute Silver Age for kids vibe.
  • Meanwhile, Marvel is canceling “Black Panther” after #529, we assume to make more room for even more X-books and Disney tie-ins. Also getting canceled? “Punisher MAX”.
  • Marvel also has a boatload of graphic novels hitting the stands for once, including the eighth volume of “Uncanny X-Men” from the Marvel Masterworks line.
  • Dark Horse is rolling out more Conan, and even more Star Wars books.
  • IDW is launching a new Doctor Who miniseries, and John Byrne’s Next Men by John Byrne gets a wrap-up mini starting with issue #40
  • And finally, Image is putting out a new issue of “Spawn”, shockingly enough, and is debuting a comic called “Thief of Thieves”. So it’s a thief who steals other thieves? Isn’t that kind of like Candleja

[Ed. here: While we're busy finding Seitz, you can see the full release list under the jump.]

Pull List: Comics Coming Out 2/1/12

02.01.12 Written by Dan Seitz

There’s actually quite a lot hitting stands this week. Well, quite a lot that we care about and/or want to make fun of, so let’s get to it!

  • DC puts out Xombi as a trade, and the Animal Man/Swamp Thing crossover kicks into high gear.
  • Marvel has the third issue of “Cable Beats Up The Avengers”, er, “X-Sanction”, begins its huge push for Winter Soldier, and also is apparently trying to bring Carnage back with “Carnage U.S.A.”. He kills, eats, and impersonates Miley Cyrus. OK, not really, but that’d be a better story.
  • Oh, there’s also a new issue of “The Twelve”. That only took forever.
  • Image launches Alpha Girl, which is about all the women of the 1980s being turned into rabid man-eaters (literally). Hoping for another huge hit TV show, guys?
  • Also, Fatale #2 is hitting print, so go buy it.
  • Dark Horse has “Dawn of the Jedi #0″ as a one-shot.
  • IDW has more Locke and Key and they’re also firing up a “Magic: The Gathering” miniseries, since this is apparently 1996.
  • And Dynamite is launching “Warriors of Mars”, which crosses over John Carter and Gullivar Jones, and unless you’re a huge pulp fiction nerd, you probably have no idea what I just said.

Let us know what you’re picking up today, and as always, the full list is under the cut.

Waiting for “New 52″ Trades? Get Comfy, It’ll Be a While

01.30.12 Written by Dan Seitz

This is how you know DC is selling single issues hand over fist; some of the collected trades hitting stores won’t be on your FLCS’s shelves until November. But for the really popular titles, you’ll only have to wait until…May!

Oh, and in an addition punch to the nards, among the first collections streeting are “Catwoman” and “Green Arrow”. So, you know, if you secretly hate somebody, and their birthday is in May, you can say it with comics.

And if there’s somebody you like, there’s the “Animal Man” collection and “Wonder Woman” is meriting a nice hardcover.

In fact, going through the whole list, it’s pretty interesting to see what DC did and didn’t realize. For example, collected volumes of all those cancelled titles are all called “Volume One”, instead of “The Complete Series” or whatever, and some of these collect seven issues instead of six.

Still…November, guys?

Pull List: Comics Coming Out 1/24/12

01.25.12 Written by Dan Seitz

Today we have for you…way too many comics with decimals in their numbers. Did somebody at Wizard annoy the entire comics industry?

Anyway, hitting stands today is…

  • The first issue of the next “Bulletproof Coffin” miniseries from Image hits stands tomorrow, so buy it. Birch gets into what makes it so awesome, but suffice to say, if you don’t pick anything else up at the FLCS, get this.
  • DC has “Unwritten” #33.5 hitting the stands. Pretentious numbering aside, hooray more “Unwritten!”
  • And Marvel has “Deadpool” #49.1. We hope the Merc with a Mouth has something to say about this.
  • Dark Horse has more “King Conan” starting up.
  • And finally, literally everything IDW is putting out has at least one variant cover hitting stands. So heads up.
  • As always, let us know what you’re buying this week. Personally, we’ll be getting ourselves some “Aquaman”, “Green Lantern: New Guardians” and “Alpha Flight”, just because we have a soft spot for those Canucks. And, of course, “Bulletproof Coffin”. We’re not kidding. Read this book.

Five ’90s Comic Book Movies That Could Use a Reboot

01.18.12 Written by Dan Seitz

Back in the early ’90s, Tim Burton delivered “Batman”, a genuinely good movie and completely different from anything we’d seen before. This wasn’t Adam West in an ill-fitting leotard. It was grittier, artier, and just basically the last thing people expected from a Batman movie. It became a massive phenomenon: I still have my Batman sneakers.

This phenomenon was immediately followed with a string of either flat-out awful turkeys that went straight for the camp; movies that were solid, but not necessarily franchise carriers; or movies that were genuinely good, but mismarketed.

So, we’re looking at those movies of twenty years ago, and seeing what could stand a reboot.

Pull List: Comics Coming Out 1/18/12

01.18.12 Written by Dan Seitz

It’s kind of a light week for comics this week, but, as always, there’s some interesting stuff hitting the stands.

  • Animal Man #2 gets a second printing, and Batman #5 gets a whole ton of variant covers. Or you can spend four bucks for the combo pack. Or just buy it digitally. Also of interest to Suicide Squad fans, a trade of “Secret Six” is hitting the stands today.
  • Marvel wraps up its John Carter comics this month, and puts out a trade of “The Twelve”, which we’re looking forward to. Also the Defenders one-shot, even if their attempts to revive the brand aren’t 100% at the moment.
  • Image has the latest issue of “Chew” hitting the stands.
  • Dark Horse is wrapping up its “Mass Effect” miniseries, and giving us some more Conan.
  • IDW is putting out more Danger Girl and reissuing all the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles they’ve printed as “Global Conquest” editions, i.e. “please rebuy these issues with a different cover for four bucks.”
  • And Dynamite has probably the most interesting deal of the day: pick up their “Lord of the Jungle” first issue for just one buck. Yeah, for a dollar, we’ll try anything once.
  • Let us know what you’re grabbing from the FLCS in the comments, and the full release list is under the jump.
