Sam Raimi is one of those guys who, no matter how many commercial movies he makes, will never stray far from his roots. After all, he followed up the Spidey movies with “Drag Me To Hell”. And now he’s at it again, this time with a classic novel.
For those of you who only know it from a passing reference in “Rocky Horror”, John Wyndham’s “Day of the Triffids” is actually a really fun and really well-written novel. Essentially, 99% of the world’s population goes blind due to what we later learn is a superweapon malfunction. Unfortunately, that takes away our one advantage against the triffids, a bunch of walking, poisonous, p.o.’ed plants.
It’s been on screens before: on the big screen in ’62, and two TV miniseries, one in the ’80s and one actually last year. On the other hand, we’ve never seen a quick montage of anti-triffid weapons being assembled ending with Bruce Campbell saying “Groovy.” And since that’s required by law to be in every Sam Raimi film, we can’t wait.
