Angry Birds Coming To Facebook (and other news)

03.09.11 Written by RoboPanda

Angry Birds has already spawned a TV show and an awesome cake and a table game and a console game in development, so it was only a matter of time before Facebook got their paws onto it somehow, like a puppy with an ice cube.  Rovio has announced they’re launching Angry Birds on Facebook in early May.  If my wall starts filling up with requests to send black chickens to people, I’mma do a fly by and drop the frozen turkeys from the sky, death from above all WKRP style ’cause I keeps it real. Like mad Butterball real, gnome sayin’?

Anyway, there are also three videos after the jump.  In the first, Conan O’Brien plays a giant-sized version of the game using IKEA furniture, like ya do.  It seems like an ad for IKEA, and yet all I take away from this is that IKEA furniture will shatter like a liquid-nitrogen-dipped Wesley Snipes if you throw a beach ball at it.

The second video is a mashup of Tron and Angry Birds (but of course).  The last video is a preview of the new St. Patrick’s Day levels for Angry Birds Seasons. Green pigs in jaunty leprechaun hats?  Don’t mind if I do.

The Day Facebook Died: A Twitter Retrospective

09.24.10 Written by RoboPanda

Yesterday the internets nearly imploded when Facebook went down from about 8:30 A.M. EST until around noon EST.  Here’s the technical explanation for the downtime:

Today we made a change to the persistent copy of a configuration value that was interpreted as invalid. This meant that every single client saw the invalid value and attempted to fix it. Because the fix involves making a query to a cluster of databases, that cluster was quickly overwhelmed by hundreds of thousands of queries a second.  To make matters worse, every time a client got an error attempting to query one of the databases it interpreted it as an invalid value, and deleted the corresponding cache key. This meant that even after the original problem had been fixed, the stream of queries continued.

Lol wut?  Instead of doing an in-depth analysis of Facebook’s technical difficulties (because, frankly, I don’t understand that or care as long as the porn still gets to my laptop somehow), I am instead going to do a break down on some of the funnier tweets made about The Great Three Or Four Hours Or So We Couldn’t Get On Facebook…gate of 2010.

First, some people noticed that Farmville was unplayable:

Can Diaspora Replace Facebook?

09.17.10 Written by Dan Seitz

For every successful site, there’s one just like it that addresses what users claim to hate about the original. The RC Cola to their Coke, if you will. And Facebook’s competitor is Diaspora.

Diaspora is essentially Facebook, but with one difference; the data is on your computer, not Diaspora’s servers. In theory, this means that Diaspora users have more privacy; in practice, we’re pretty sure it’s got a long way to go. But all traffic on the site is encrypted, so that’s nice, at least. It’s also halfway between Facebook and that cornea-scarring site called MySpace; as it can be hosted anywhere, there are infinite numbers of configurations and customizable stuff to throw at it.

Can Diaspora dethrone Facebook? Probably not. Unless they ban Zynga. Then we’re talking.

So, What Does The Head of Facebook Actually Think Of You?

09.17.10 Written by Dan Seitz

He thinks you’re a moron!

Zuckerberg recently confirmed that early on in Facebook’s existence, when he was given lots of personal information and was generally entrusted to keep it safe and respect the privacy of his users, he summed it up on an IM conversation as “They trust me — dumb f**ks.”

Zuckerberg claims that he’s “learned and grown a lot” since that message, which considering Facebook’s continued attempts to vomit your personal information all over anybody who will pay them for it, can safely be translated out to “I’ve learned not to express what I actually think of my users in public so I don’t have all these goddamn scandals to deal with.” Far be it from us not to remind you that this is the guy who keeps trying to roll back privacy on his website, and makes it complicated to get said privacy back.

And then he complains about a lawsuit trying to violate his personal privacy. What a dumb f**k.
