Turkey’s First Humanoid Robot Is Slow As Hell (Videos)

10.18.10 Written by Chodin

I’d like to start a contagious slow clap right now for the country of Turkey. Researchers at Sabanci University have just unveiled the country’s first humanoid robot, making Turkey just one step closer to the apocalyptic wasteland that Sarah Connor predicted. Named SURALP (Sabanci University Robot Research Laboratory Platform), the humanoid project has been in development all the way back to 2002, with a hefty price tag of around one million large.

SURALP stands 164cm (5’4″) tall and weighs 114kg (251 lbs). It has 29 degrees of freedom (2 arms x6, 2 legs x6, neck x2, torso x1) and is equipped with cameras for vision. It can maintain balance on various inclines using a combination of gyro sensors and accelerometers, and will reach out its arm to steady itself against a wall if it falters. [Plasticpals]

But don’t get your panties all in a bunch just yet, Turkey’s unofficial Autobot isn’t all that meets the eye. Demonstration videos are displayed after the jump, but I warn you this Turkish humanoid is slower than Forrest Gump before the leg braces came off. Cool robot? Of course. Quick and hasty? Nay, I say. But don’t take my word for it, see for yourself.

Slowest demonstrations ever after the jump:

SPRAY SOME GLASS ON THAT

02.03.10 Written by RoboPanda

    Oh man, glass is AWESOME.

Nanopool has come up with a nanotechnology-based spray-on glass coating that is supposed to be released in Britain soon at a cost of £5 ($8 US) per bottle.  How awesome could something be if it’s that cheap?  Face-punchingly awesome, Francis!  It’s transparent, non-toxic, food-safe [glass is delicious], flexible, breathable, and only 100 nanometres thick (15-30 molecules thick, 1/500th the thickness of a human hair).

sprayonliquidglassIt protects surfaces (for about a year) from damage of several types: water, UV radiation, dirt, heat, oil, mild abrasion, etc.  It can drastically reduce how often a person has to clean around the house. It resists bacterial contamination, giving it enormous potential in the healthcare field.  In agricultural studies, vines coated with the spray resisted mildew, and seeds coated with the stuff grew more rapidly without anti-fungal chemicals. Tests so far suggest it’s even safe to use in vitro.  I don’t know how they figured that out, but now I’m picturing glass-coated babies just shooting across the delivery room towards a nurse holding a net.  Just don’t use a net made out of silk, or that baby will electrocute us all.
