A Compendium of Cool Comics Cosplay: January 27th

01.27.12 Written by Angelophile

It’s time once again for our Friday comic book cosplay feature, spotlighting the best superhero (and villain) related costuming from the cosplay community.  We’re casting the spotlight onto those cosplayers who we think deserve special recognition for coming up with the best costumes, whatever the budget, and the photographers who capture them for posterity.

Gamma Squad is committed to giving a voice to the cosplay community that thrives in groups like our friends at TheSuperheroCostumingForum.com. Each week we spotlight our favorite costumes and each month we host a cosplay contest. We’ll be picking a theme for each month and inviting cosplayers, costumers and photographers to submit related pictures of their work to our Flickr group to be considered. We’ll then pick our top choices and post them on Gamma Squad for the adoration of all.

The theme for the upcoming month is:

  • Super Villains and Diabolical Foes

For now, enjoy this week’s selection!

Alan Moore Greets Occupy V Masks Head-On, Awkward or Inspiring?

01.16.12 Written by Chodin

Despite how other graphic novelists may feel, Alan Moore has made it apparent that he doesn’t mind the whole Occupy Movement thing. Hell, some could say he’s downright fascinated with the correlation between his V for Vendetta Guy Fawkes mask and the Occupy Movement. And for that very reason, until now, he never actually journeyed into the crowd. A local news station followed as Moore entered an Occupy London demonstration and got face to face with V personally. And don’t you worry, this Occupier is sure to make everyone epic face palm around the 1:52 mark. When asked by Alan Moore what the mask had to do with the movement, his response was:

“The whole, um, like character is, ah, very relevant to what we’re doing at the moment, because, ah, we’re going against a system which we feel is corrupt and, um, and ah, so we’re doing the same kind of thing as…what happened in the movie.”

Alan, I spear to God that you’ve got intelligent fans under 30…
just give us one more chance!?

Humpday Mashup Dump

09.28.11 Written by RoboPanda

Good morning you princes of Maine, you kings of New England, you stalkers of Anne Hathaway. Here are all the mashup and parody videos I didn’t get a chance to cover, thrown in your face like you’re Jodie Foster working for the FBI.

In the offing for today:

  1. “The Simpsons” matches with the Apollo 13 trailer well, although it’s totally disturbing to hear Tom Hanks’ voice coming out of Homer. [via The High Definite]
  2. Somebody finally added the music we were all thinking about to that “Doctor Who” scene with the Tenth Doctor. [via Bleeding Cool]
  3. “My Little Pony” does an homage to Star Wars. Here’s a side-by-side comparison via io9.
  4. Here’s the opening segment of “The Simpsons” recreated in Minecraft with Lisa’s music teacher buck naked for some reason. [via Geekosystem]
  5. Inset picture: “V is for Vendetta”, original artist unknown (Anonymous?), via Pleated-Jeans.

Humpday Mashup Dump

05.04.11 Written by RoboPanda

Good afternoon you princes of Maine, you kings of New England, you stalkers of Chinese medical equipment. Here are all the mashup and parody videos I didn’t get a chance to cover, thrown in your face like you’re Jodie Foster working for the FBI.

In the offing for today:

  1. FIRST VIDEO: Russian figure skating pair Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov won the silver at the World Figure Skating Championships 2011 for this Mario themed routine. In Soviet Russia, mushroom yadda yadda I love America. [via Kotaku]
  2. SECOND VIDEO: Super Mario Bros. would have been so awesome with a Portal gun, as long as the Goombas still couldn’t shoot lasers. [via Dorkly]
  3. THIRD VIDEO: My Little Pony meets V For Vendetta in “P For Pinketta”. [via ComicsAlliance]
  4. FOURTH VIDEO: Ginnyisaprincess does a Hermoine Granger / Harry Potter themed version of Rebecca Black’s “Friday”. [via NerdBastards]
  5. Banner picture by Samuel H. Diamond.
  6. Inset picture via 4Chan. (click to enlarge)

Washington State’s New Slogan: “D for Douchebag”?

11.12.10 Written by Dan Seitz

Sadly, the above hot woman in a V mask is not what Washington State University students were subjected to last Friday. Nor did they hear incitations to rebellion or even a discussion of politics. No, instead they were subjected to a jackass who imitated a great moment in an actually-pretty-good movie to…b*tch about squirrels.

The video is below the jump, but we need to remind you of something before you watch it: this annoying little wanker set it up to play every hour, on the hour, in two buildings until campus employees shut it down at 5p.m. Also, that November 5th is Guy Fawkes Day, which actually has some political relevance. Hugo Weaving Is The Red Skull

05.05.10 Written by Jon

Hugo WeavingHugo Weaving has been in everything. And by everything, I mean just-about-every-genre-property that you could care about. I mean, he was Agent Smith in The Matrix, Elrond in Lord of the Rings, Megatron in Transformers, V in V for Vendetta (which, Alan Moore’s heavily bearded wishes aside, is technically a DC comics property)…and now he’s going to be a marvel character.

Yep, Marvel has confirmed that Weaving has signed on to play The Red Skull in Captain America: The First Avenger. I can’t think of any other actor that’s been in so many different geek-friendly properties (although Patrick Stewart’s done his share) and now’s he’s got another one under his belt. All he needs to do is find a role in the next Star Trek film and pop up on Clone Wars and I think we’ve officially found our “Nerd King.”

(He can just wear the Elrond getup.)

[Coming Soon]
