Six Reasons Resident Evil: Revelations Is Better Than Resident Evil 5

02.09.12 Written by Nathan Birch

A couple days ago Capcom released Resident Evil: Revelations for the 3DS, and so far the game doesn’t seem to be generating much buzz — at least not compared to what a major console Resident Evil game with a number attached to it’s name would get, and that’s a shame. Why? Because the game is pretty damn great. In fact, I’d go so far as to say it’s quite a bit better than the last major entry in the series, Resident Evil 5.

What makes Revelations better than RE5? Well for starters…

It’s Tim Schafer Appreciation Day on the Blog Apparently — Schafer Responds to Notch About Psychonauts 2

02.09.12 Written by Nathan Birch

As Dan already reported, yesterday Tim Schafer started a Kickstarter campaign to fund the making of a new adventure game through his company Double Fine, and ended up collecting over 400 thousand dollars in less than 24-hours, which is pretty damn awesome news. I mean, sure, us fans of LucasArts’ old adventure games have been surviving — living day to day on a thin gruel of clunky Telltale episodic games — but it’ll be good to have to real thing back.

But what about the story I reported on a couple days ago? The thing where creator of Minecraft, Notch, offered to help fund the production of a new Psychonauts game? Well, Tim Schafer replied to Notch over Twitter, and his response was promising indeed…

So yeah, on Monday I think most fans of Schafer/Double Fine were kind of resigned to the fact that the company was leaving it’s roots behind to make Kinect Sesame Street games. Now it’s Thursday and suddenly Double Fine’s making a new adventure game and maybe, probably, possibly a new Psychonauts game. This is not only great news for fans of funny, smart, original video games, but a much deserved middle finger directed at the rest the industry that won’t fund any game that doesn’t involve shooting aliens/foreigners/zombies in the face. I’m loving this.

“Kingdoms of Amalur”: Initial Impressions

02.08.12 Written by Dan Seitz

On the surface, this was either going to be an awesome game or one stuck in the ’90s. A story by R.A. Salvatore! Art by Todd McFarlane! Ken Ralston designing the actual game!

Well, eight or so hours in, here’s what we think: it’s an MMO for people who hate to go on the Internet.

Sad to say, so far the story isn’t any great shakes, and the art isn’t particularly unique either. Honestly, so far we’ve been skipping cutscenes because they’ve been tending towards the dull and pompous. But there are some good decisions here, especially in the mechanics.

In terms of combat, this plays a lot more like a Zelda-esque dungeon crawler than a typical role-playing game, and that’s a good thing. Similarly, the leveling system is pretty easy to understand and to use. Think “God of War” meets “Skyrim”.

The overall vibe, though, is very much of an MMO. It’s open world, and there’s plenty to do, but it feels a bit like other players were supposed to fill in the gap between the game’s writing and the player.

Still, so far it’s engaging and fun, and we’ll have a fully-fleshed review later in the week.

You’re a Big Franchise Now LittleBigPlanet — Sackboy’s Getting a Kart Racer

02.08.12 Written by Nathan Birch

So, how do you know when a video game series has definitively gone from being a fresh, interesting newcomer to a dependable money-spinning franchise? When it gets a kart racer of course.

The latest series to get the little-cars-and-turtle-shells treatment? LittleBigPlanet.

The game hasn’t been 100% officially announced, but Sony’s currently holding their Destination Playstation event for retailers, and numerous people at the show are reporting having seen or played the new kart racer. Not too many exciting facts about how the game plays have come out, but apparently you’ll be able to put your Move controller inside a little plastic steering wheel shell to play. Groundbreaking Sony.

The Destination Playstation event continues on until Friday, so there’s probably going to be even more Sony game reveals forthcoming. Could they drop a God of War 4 announcement this week? I’ll letcha know if they do.

“The Darkness II”: The Review

02.08.12 Written by Dan Seitz

Should you spend $60 on “The Darkness II”? Absolutely not.

Why? Is it horrible? No. Is it offensive? Eh, not really, and not deliberately.

The problem is that, pure and simple, this game is too mediocre and buggy to be worth your $60. Maybe your $20, because you’re not missing anything world-shaking here, but you should wait anyway, for the patches to come out and make this game playable.

Creator of Minecraft Earns Even More Nerd Cred by Saying He Wants to Help Make Psychonauts 2

02.07.12 Written by Nathan Birch

I may not be hugely into Minecraft, but the game’s creator Notch (aka Markus Persson) seems like a cool guy, and my opinion of the dude was only solidified last night when he sent Tim Schafer a tweet saying he’d like to help create a sequel to Psychonauts.

Earlier in the week Schafer had done an interview where he admitted he’s pitched Psychonauts 2 to several publishers, but nobody had been willing to pony up the money to get the game made. Well, apparently there’s at least one person with money who’d like to see another Psychonauts…

A truly independently produced Pyschonauts sequel? Now that’s something I’d like to see. Tim Schafer says he’s fine where he is now making low-budget original titles. He says sequels aren’t his thing, not that he’s really speaking from experience — nobody’s actually given him the opportunity to make a sequel before. Come on Tim, take the opportunity.
