What’s With Saturn’s Hexagonal Jetstream?

01.23.12 Written by Dan Seitz

At right, courtesy of NASA is what the weather is like around Saturn’s north pole.

Weird, huh? It gets weirder.

That hexagonal shape seems to be some form of jet stream that circles the entire planet. We knew that something like this existed before, thanks to photos taken by Voyager, but Cassini finally got a few pictures of it…and now we know this thing doesn’t just have a really weird shape, it’s very enduring, since it literally hasn’t changed since we’ve taken photos of it decades ago with Voyager.

Then again, we are talking about a planet with heat and pressures so intense it turns hydrogen into a metal and radiates 2.5 times as much energy as it absorbs from the sun. So weirdness is pretty much the order of the day.

Australia Is Getting DC Comics License Plates? From the ’80s?

11.09.11 Written by Dan Seitz

So, we’ve got to ask, because it seems to happen an awful lot with DC merchandise, especially the stuff aimed at the mainstream market…does DC update its licensing art, like, at all?

Not that we don’t enjoy the art on these Australian license plates, because we’re ’80s kids and that art is very much part of the comics of our misspent youth, but, seriously, thirty years have passed, guys. This is the same art you were using on Underroos. It’s time to update it a little bit.

Oh, right, the license plates. They’re from the Aussie province of Victoria, which you know because it has Melbourne in it. And apparently their DMV writes truly terrible ad copy. Seriously. Check out the slideshow after the jump for the plates, and the comedy.

Why Are Cats Unamused By Walking Chumbys?

10.18.10 Written by Dan Seitz

What, precisely, is a Chumby? Basically it’s what happens when your alarm clock makes sweet, sweet love to your iPhone.

OK, that was gross, even by my standards. Basically, a Chumby is a small, open-source gadget that can run little software widgets. It’s got a touchscreen, so you can use it to access the Internet, look up the weather, and so on. So essentially it really is just an alarm clock, just a more convenient one that will give you weather and news. Er, without having to listen to the radio.

Anyway, the nice thing about Chumby is not only that it’s hackable, the manufacturer actually encourages Chumby owners to do so. Want to extend the battery life? Install Windows? Install an FM tuner to make even more of a nerdly alarm clock? Go nuts! Which is why this guy attached legs to his and, as promised, his cat is unamused:

Can the Stretchphone Put Nokia Back On Top?

10.05.10 Written by Dan Seitz

You’ve got to feel bad for Nokia. They used to be one of the biggest cell-phone companies in the world, and then Apple showed up and clowned them. But this hasn’t stopped Nokia from dreaming up new, and really weird, concept phones, and what we’re dubbing the Stretchphone is arguably the best.

The entire idea of the phone is that it stretches, obviously, and that you wear it. How’s that possible? Evaporated gold, which offers both the conductivity needed and the flexibility needed. That lets the phone stretch 20% of its length without going on the fritz. But don’t take our word for it; here’s a video that will demonstrate the concept:

Watson is Watching You Poop

06.11.10 Written by RoboPanda

Youtube user tdous noticed something odd when he was playing “Sherlock Holmes Nemesis”.  The NPC of Watson follows you around, but you never see or hear him move.  So tdous filmed it and added a John Williams score (“Main Title and First Victim” from Jaws) to amp the creepiness up to eleven.

It probably doesn’t help that they also gave Watson a blank stare and a pedosmile.  No wonder Holmes was on drugs.  I’m about to inject a seven percent solution of cocaine directly into my eye from watching this video.  Also because it’s Friday.

MEXICAN LARPING GAME SHOW

02.05.10 Written by RoboPanda

asgaard

Looks like your girlfriend had quadruplets.

The clip below is from the Mexican TV show “Asgaard”.  ToplessRobot has the awesome trailer as well.  Contestants live-action role play their way through an insanely complicated set, winning real ounces of silver as prizes.  They have enemy characters trying to set them back and allies to help them.  It’s like a pile of Dragon back issues exploded all over this set and the contestants, and all they got were some silver pieces.  Seems like a lot of work for something worth $15 an ounce.  How many pimp cups full of mead can you get for that these days?
